one of the common request’s i get from my readers is to post a recipe video which is easy and nutritional for lunch boxes. perhaps it is common question to most of the working and non working mothers. to answer that question, chana pulao recipe is a best answer as it would be appreciated by all age groups including kids and adults. i personally prepare it frequently for my husband’s lunch box and he really enjoys with overnight left over curries. according to him, moong dal tadka or simple aloo gobi curry combination with the pulao tastes like heaven. i even have unconventional way of preparing the channa rice with the left over channa masala recipe. basically i mix the cooked rice with leftover channa masala and saute it for few minutes till it is mixed properly.

Ingredients (1 cup = 250 ML)
  • 3 tsp oil
  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta
  • 1 star anise
  • 5 cloves
  • 1 inch cinnamon / dalchini
  • 1 tsp jeera / cumin
  • ¾ tsp aamchur / dry mango powder
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • 1 to mato finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ¼ tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp kasuri methi / dry fenugreek leaves
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cup water
  • 1 cup chickpea / chana soaked overnight and boiled 10 minutes
  • 1 cup basmati rice soaked 20 minutes
  • coriander to garnish
Instructions
  1. firstly, in a pressure cooker heat 3 tsp oil and saute 1 bay leaf, 1 star anise, 5 cloves, 1 inch cinnamon and 1 tsp jeera till it turns aromatic.
  2. saute onion, ginger garlic paste and tomatoes.
  3. further add ¼ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp chilli powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ¼ tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp garam masala, ¾ tsp aamchur, 1 tsp kasuri methi and 1 tsp salt. saute well.
  4. now add 1 cup soaked and boiled chickpea and saute for a minute.
  5. furthermore add 1 cup basmati rice (soaked for 20 minutes) and saute gently.
  6. now add 2 cup water and stir well.
  7. cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
  8. finally, garnish with coriander and serve chana pulao along with onion tomato raita.

  5. further add ¼ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp chilli powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ¼ tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp garam masala, ¾ tsp aamchur, 1 tsp kasuri methi and 1 tsp salt. saute well.

  6. now add 1 cup soaked and boiled chickpea and saute for a minute. make sure to soak chickpea overnight and boil for 10 minutes.

  7. furthermore add 1 cup basmati rice (soaked for 20 minutes) and saute gently.

  9. cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles or till the rice gets cooked completely.

notes:

  • firstly, add vegetables of your choice along with chana to make pulao recipe more nutritious.
  • also, if using canned chana / chickpea no need to soak or boil. you can directly pressure cook with rice.
  • furthermore, add chana masala along with spices to make pulao more flavourful.
  • finally, chana pulao recipe taste great when served hot along with raita.
