being a vegetarian, i have very less option when it comes to protein based dishes in our diet. but luckily recipe like chole masala, lentil based curries and even black chana masala recipe helps out to supply the missing nutrient in our diet. in addition, it also contains a lot of fibre and hence the dry variation of kala chana is often served as a complete meal by itself. further, it is also rich in vegetable protein with very less calorie dense and it recommended for diabetes patients. but i personally prepare it frequently for other reasons. i personally like the simplicity of the recipe and it can be done with just onion and tomatoes with basic spice powders.

furthermore some important tips, recommendations and serving ideas for a perfect kala chana recipe. firstly, i would heavily recommend soaking the black chickpeas before preparing this curry. ideally, overnight soaking should be sufficient and followed by pressure cooking chana must help in hastening the cooking process. secondly, while sautéing onion and tomatoes, you can optionally add besan flour too which should yield a thick curry. i have not added and kept the curry very thin as i personally like it this way. lastly, the same recipe can be extended further by adding choice of lentils or dal’s while pressure cooking it. the end result curry tastes great and serves ideal with jeera rice.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin / jeera
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 3 pods cardamom
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta
  • 1 tsp dry fenugreek leaves / kasuri methi
  • pinch of hing / asafoetida
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilli, slit
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 cup tomato, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp turmeric / haldi
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 3 cup water
  • 1 tsp mango powder / aamchur powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • 1 cup black chana / kala chana, soaked overnight
  • 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped

Instructions
 

  • firstly, in a pressure cooker take 3 tsp oil and saute spices.
  • now saute 1 onion, 2 green chilli and 1 tsp ginger garlic paste.
  • also, saute 1 cup tomato until it turns soft and mushy.
  • furthermore, add spices and 1 tsp salt.
  • saute on low flame, till the oil releases from tomato.
  • now add 1 cup black chana or kala chana soaked overnight. saute for a minute.
  • add 3 cups of water and mix well.
  • cover and pressure cook for 8 whistles or till chana get cooked completely.
  • now add ½ tsp garam masala, 2 tbsp coriander and mix well.
  • finally, serve kala chana curry with rice or roti.

notes:

  • firstly, soak kala chana, else it will not get cooked completely.
  • also, use tomato puree if you are looking for more gravy curry.
  • additionally, add store brought chole masala to make curry more flavourful.
