kat saaru recipe | lemon rasam recipe | lemon lentil soup with step by step photo recipe. lemon rasam is one the most popular rasam in udupi, south india. it is easy to prepare and tastes delicious. a healthy rasam recipe suits best during winter and rainy season. it goes well with hot steamed rice and pickle.

if you are suffering from cold and looking for fast relief?? then lemon rasam or kokam rasam is the best. i have shared an easy recipe on how to prepare lemon rasam in cooker. however, you can also prepare rasam in open vessel by adding cooked dal. adjust the tanginess and spiciness according to your choice. however, i prefer kat saaru to be slightly spicy.

Ingredients
  • ¾ cup toor dal
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • ¾ tsp turmeric powder / haldi
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • ½ lemon juice
  • salt to taste
  • water as required
  • few coriander leaves, finely chopped
for tempering:
  • ¾ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp urad dal
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds / jeera
  • pinch hing / asafoetida
  • few curry leaves
  • 2 tsp oil
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
  1. finely chop the tomatoes,chilli, ginger, coriander leaves and keep aside.
  2. take washed dal in a pressure cooker. add chopped tomatoes, green chilli, ginger, salt, turmeric and 3 cups of water, mix well and pressure cook on a high flame for 5-6 whistles.
  3. when the pressure settles check if the dal is cooked well. whisk the dal so that the dal gets mashed well.
  4. adjust the consistency by adding required water. check the salt and add more if required.
  5. get to a boil and turn off the flame. make sure your rasam is pouring watery consistency.
  6. prepare the tempering. heat oil in a small pan. add the mustard seeds, jeera, urad dal, hing. allow to splutter.
  7. add some chopped coriander leaves, squeeze some lemon juice and pour the tempering over the rasam.
  8. serve lemon rasam / kat saaru with hot steamed rice.

notes:

  • this rasam can be served as soup as well.
  • the consistency should be watery and not thick like dal fry.
