we prepare variety of modak or we call it modaka every year during ganesh chauthi festival. however, this year it is very special as i am preparing it for my blog. perhaps out of all these year the shape of modak has turned out to be perfect. i trust it is the blessing of lord ganesha for my work through my blog. i am so happy with the results and even my husband shared the same feeling.

steamed modak

according to puranas, modak was the prize won by lord ganesha in a competition. goddess parvati had few modaks and she wasn’t sure to whom to present it. so confused parvati, organised a competition and asked both ganesha and karthik to circle the entire world 3 times. lord ganesha won the competition by going around lord shiva and parvathi. since than steamed modak has been a favourite sweet dish of ganesha.

Ingredients
for stuffing:
  • 1 cup fresh / desiccated coconut
  • ½ cup jagger
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds / til
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 2 tsp cashews, chopped
  • 1 tsp almonds, chopped
  • ½ tsp cardamom powder, elachi powder
for modak dough:
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cup rice flour
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
coconut-jaggery stuffing recipe:
  1. in a large kadai take half cup of jaggery.
  2. to that add grated fresh / desiccated coconut. fresh coconut taste great.
  3. saute on medium flame till the jaggery melts.
  4. continue to saute till the jaggery dried a little.
  5. now add dry roasted sesame seeds and poppy seeds.
  6. also add chopped dry fruits and cardamom powder
  7. mix well and allow to cool to temperature. meanwhile prepare the dough.
modak dough recipe:
  1. in a large kadai / vessel add 1 cup water.
  2. to that add ghee and salt to taste.
  3. get the water to boil.
  4. once the water starts to rolling boil, switch off the flame and add rice flour.
  5. mix well making sure rice flour gets cover with water uniformly.
  6. now cover and keep aside for 3 minutes.
  7. knead the dough adding ghee for atleast 5 minutes. be careful as the dough will be hot.
  8. add water if required and knead till you get smooth dough. else when you prepare modak, it breaks.
  9. now pinch a small lemon sized ball and flatten it.
  10. with the help of both thumbs start pressing the edges and create a dent in centre.
  11. slowly press from edges till it forms a cup.
  12. now scoop 2 tsp of prepared coconut-jaggery stuffing.
  13. start creating pleats with your index finger and thumb.
  14. now get the pleats together to form a bundle.
  15. close the top by pinching and making it pointed.
steaming modak:
  1. heat some water into a large pan and , place a box and then place a cloth to prevent from sticking.
  2. now slowly place the modaks leaving gaps in between.
  3. cover and steam the modak for 10 minutes or till the shiny texture appears on them.
  4. offer the modak to lord ganesha before you have it.

notes:

  • knead the dough well adding required amount of water and ghee till it forms smooth dough.
  • if the modaks break while you are pressing and creating cup, do not worry. sprinkle water and ghee, knead well.
  • wet your hands with water before you start preparing modaks, else it will stick to your hand.
