as i mentioned previously, the recipe for semiya upma have many variations and may differ with vegetables or spiced added to it. the most common recipe is to prepare it without any extra vegetables or also known as plain upma. the taste is derived mainly from the onions and vegetables with hint of lemon juice topped at the end of recipe. in fact it is the most common way of preparing the vermicelli upma. but the other variation may also involve by adding veggies like beans, green peas, carrots and even broccoli. in addition the recipe can also be extended by adding spice powder like garam masala, pulav masala and vangi bath masala. further the vermicelli recipe can also be prepared using bisi bele bath masala by adding lentils and vegetables.

furthermore, i would like to add some tips and recommendations to this semiya upma recipe. firstly, i have roasted the semiya or vermicelli before using it in the upma. basically it helps to get rid of the raw smell. but as alternative you can also use store bought roasted bambino vermicelli which should skip additional step. secondly, i have not added finely chopped tomatoes while sautéing it with onions. the taste should be very similar to tomato bath or tomato upma recipe. lastly, and more importantly make sure to add the roasted vermicelli only when the water starts to boil. otherwise the end result may be mushy and sticky and may not be pleasant to be served.

Ingredients
  

  • to cook vermicelli:
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 cup vermicelli / semiya
  • water to cook
  • ½ tsp salt
  • other ingredients:
  • 3 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1 dried red chilli
  • few curry leaves
  • handful peanuts
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilli, slit
  • 2 tbsp onion, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp turmeric / haldi
  • 2 tbsp peas / matar
  • 2 tbsp carrot, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp capsicum, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp beans, finely chopped
  • ½ lemon
  • 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped

Instructions
 

  • firstly, in a kadai heat 3 tsp oil and splutter 1 tsp mustard, ½ tsp urad dal, 1 tsp chana dal, 1 dried red chilli and few curry leaves.
  • also, add handful peanuts and roast till turn crunchy on low flame.
  • now add 1 inch ginger and 2 green chilli. saute well.
  • further, add 2 tbsp onion and saute slightly.
  • also add 2 tbsp peas, 2 tbsp carrot, 2 tbsp capsicum and 2 tbsp beans. saute for a minute.
  • additionally, add ½ tsp turmeric and ½ tsp salt. saute for a minute.
  • cover and cook for 2 minutes or till vegetables turn soft.
  • add in cooked semiya and mix gently. do not over mix as semiya will get mashed.
  • now add 2 tbsp coriander and ½ lemon. mix well.
  • finally, serve semiya upma with hot masala chai for morning breakfast.

  2. now in a large vessel boil water and add in roasted vermicelli.

notes:

  • firstly, if using roasted semiya then ignore roasting step.
  • also, add vegetables of your choice to make upma more nutritious.
  • additionally, cook the semiya till they are just soft. overcooking vermicelli turns them mushy.
  • finally, semiya upma recipe taste great when prepared spicy and garnished with coconut.

  2. people don’t add capsicum, i feel it can spoil the taste sometimes. also try and add boiling water to the just sauted chilli and then add semiya, it gives the spice to semiya while it’s boiling and it’s really tastes good. this is only a suggestion to other regular readers. but, it’s hebbar ji steps you will go back to anything fails she is the lady helping me a lot after my mom.
