Ingredients

for pressure cooking:

  • ½ cup toor dal washed
  • ½ cup chana dal washed
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ½ tsp turmeric / haldi

for dal preparation:

  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick / dalchini
  • 2 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
  • 1 tsp jeera / cumin seeds
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 to matoes finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • ½ tsp turmeric / haldi
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • ½ tsp aamchur powder / dry mango powder

for tadka / tempering:

  • 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
  • 2 clove garlic finely chopped
  • pinch of hing / asafoetida
  • 2 dried red chilli
  • ½ tsp kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder

Instructions

  • firstly, pressure cook dal for 5 whistles.
  • in a kadai heat ghee and add spices.
  • furthermore, add in chopped onions and ginger-garlic paste. saute well.
  • also add in chopped tomatoes and saute well.
  • now add spice powder and salt.
  • add in pressure cooked dal and mix well.
  • simmer for 6 minutes and pour the tempering / tadka over dal.
  • finally, mix the dhaba style dal tadka well and serve with hot steamed rice or roti.
