Ingredients

for roasting oats:

  • 1 cup quick cooking oats / rolled oats
  • ½ tsp oil
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder

other ingredients:

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 8 to 10 cashews
  • 1 inch ginger chopped
  • 1 green chilies chopped
  • ½ onion finely chopped
  • ½ carrots chopped
  • 6 french beans chopped
  • 5 curry leaves
  • ¼ cup green peas
  • few coriander leaves chopped
  • 2 cups water or as required
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • salt as required

Instructions

roasting oats:

  • firstly, heat ½ tsp oil in a pan and add 1 cup of oats and a pinch of turmeric powder.
  • fry them till they turn crisp.

preparing upma:

  • firstly, in a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil. add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp urad dal and 2 dried red chilli. wait till the mustard seeds crackle.
  • now add few cashews / groundnut and curry leaves.
  • add finely chopped onions. saute till they turn pinkish.
  • then add chopped chillies, carrots, beans.
  • also add green peas and cook for a minute or two.
  • then add the roasted oats. stir lightly.
  • add salt, sugar, turmeric powder as required.
  • then sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of water slowly.
  • on a low flame, steam the oats upma covering with a lid for 5 to 6 minutes.
  • furthermore, add chopped coriander leaves and squeeze some lemon juice.
  • finally, oats upma is ready.
