potlakaya chutney recipe | pudalangai chutney | snake gourd chutney with detailed photo recipe. basically, a simple chutney recipe prepared from snake gourd and grated coconut.
while most of my chutney recipes are inherited from my family, but this recipe is something unique to me. all the chutney recipes i have posted till now, it is either shared by mother or by my mother in law. however, this recipe is share by my best friend’s grandma. she comes from a telugu family, but all her schooling and education is done in karnataka. moreover, i have learned a lot andhra cuisines from her family. many many thanks for her and her family.
furthermore, the health benefits of snake gourd cannot be denied. potlakaya is very beneficial and is also considered as a healing agent for diabetic patients. modern chineese medications for diabetics involve regular consumption of snake gourd as medicine. in addition, it is also advantageous for heart disorder patients. particularly, snake gourd juice is very beneficial for heart disorder patients. finally, it is also considered to be a good medicine for jaundice and to cure dandruff.

potlakaya chutney recipe | pudalangai chutney | snake gourd chutney
Ingredients
- 1 small snake gourd / potlakaya
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 3 kashmiri red chilli
- ¾ cup coconut, fresh / desiccated
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- salt to taste
- 1 small piece of tamarind
for tempering:
- 1 tbsp oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- few curry leaves
- 1 dried red chilli
- pinch of hing
Instructions
- firstly, cut the snake gourd into lengthwise. then de-seed the seeds and chop them roughly. you can use seeds to prepare tambuli.
- furthermore, in a large pan heat oil. also add urad dal and red chillis. saute till urad dal turns golden brown.
- additionally, add chopped snake gourd. saute them on medium flame till they shrink in size.
- switch off the flame and then add grated coconut, salt, turmeric and a small ball of tamarind. allow to cool completely.
- then transfer to a blender and blend to coarse paste adding required water.
- finally, prepare the tempering with oil, mustard seeds, red chilli, curry leaves and hing. pour over chutney and serve with hot steamed rice, dosa or idli.

notes:
- firstly, roast the snake gourd till they shrink in size.
- furthermore, add a piece of jaggery to make it slightly sweet and spicy combination.
- in addition with urad dal you can also roast chana dal for slightly different flavour.
- finally, chutney taste great with rice, dosa and even with idli.
