cabbage kootu recipe | cabbage dal recipe | muttaikose kootu with detailed photo and video recipe. a healthy and tasty south indian version of dal recipe prepared with cabbage, moong dal and coconut. it is an ideal side dish or perhaps can take up the main curry as well when served with hot steamed rice. the recipe is extremely simple and can be prepared within minutes by pressure cooking moong dal and chopped cabbage.
basically, the word kootu comes from the tamil dictionary which literally means ‘add’ and hence it is prepared by adding vegetables to moong dal and coconut masala paste. also, the important factor about this dish is its consistency. generally, it has a thick consistency when compared the traditional sambar or rasam but cannot be categorized as a dry curry. in short, it is curry prepared with a combination of lentil and any choice of vegetables mainly used as a side dish to sambar, rasam, curd and poriyal combination. having said that there can be many variations to it and the most popular ones are araichivita kootu, poricha kootu and plain vegetables based kootu. this recipe of cabbage kootu recipe belongs to the plain vegetables based but i am planning to release other varieties of it soon.
i would like to add some tips, suggestions and serving ideas for this easy cabbage kootu recipe. firstly, i have prepared this kootu recipe by adding only finely chopped cabbage leaves. it can also be extended further by adding and mixing other veggies like green peas, grated gobi and also potatoes. secondly, the same recipe can also be prepared using toor dal and channa dal as an alternative to moong dal. i personally like the mung dal combination and hence used the same here but it is completely open-ended. finally, the cabbage kootu can be served not only to rice as a side dish but also to roti and chapathi.

Ingredients
for masala paste:
- ½ cup coconut, grated
- 1 tsp cumin / jeera
- 1 tbsp rice, soaked
- 2 chilli
- ½ cup water
for tempering:
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard
- ½ tsp urad dal
- few curry leaves
- pinch of hing / asafoetida
- 1 dried red chilli
other ingredients:
- ½ cup moong dal, soaked
- 2½ cup water
- 2 cup cabbage, finely chopped
- few curry leaves
- ¼ tsp turmeric
- ¾ tsp salt
Instructions
- firstly, in a kadai take ½ cup moong dal soaked for 30 minutes.
- add 2 cup water, cover and cook for 10 minutes.
- cook till the dal is half cooked.
- further, add 2 cup finely chopped cabbage, few curry leaves and ¼ tsp turmeric.
- mix well and cover and boil for 10 minutes.
- now in a blender take ½ cup coconut, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tbsp soaked rice and 2 chilli.
- add ½ cup water and blend to smooth paste.
- add in prepared masala paste to the mixture, ¾ tsp salt, ½ cup water and mix well.
- cover and cook for 10 minutes or till coconut gets cooked completely.
- now prepare the tempering by heating 2 tsp oil.
- add 1 tsp mustard, ½ tsp urad dal, few curry leaves, a pinch of hing and 1 dried red chilli.
- all the tempering to splutter and pour over kootu. mix well.
- finally, serve cabbage kootu / cabbage dal with hot steamed rice.
how to make cabbage kootu with step by step photo:

notes:
- firstly, to prepare cabbage dal in cooker, pressure cook by adding everything for 3 whistles.
- also, do not overcook moong dal as it turns to paste and doesn’t taste good.
- additionally, adjust the consistency by adding water as required.
- finally, cabbage kootu / cabbage dal tastes great when served slightly spicy and hot.
