i learnt this amazing and simple recipe of kokum curry recipe from my husband. he started to like this recipe during his stay in pune. according to him, his first encounter for kookum kadi was in ganpati pule, maharashtra. initially he thought, it would be the same as kokum rasam, what we get in south india. but, certainly both are amazing recipes but totally differ from each other. personally i like this recipe, because of its simplicity and ease of preparation, yet delivers an amazing taste to your meal.
furthermore, i would like to share few health benefits of kokum curries. kokum is mainly used to solve the digestion and constipation problems. the combination of chemicals in kokum helps to reduce the inflammation in the gut and stimulate proper nutrient uptake and digestion of food. secondly, kokum is high in fibre and absolutely no cholesterol. hence it is very good for your heart. lastly, it helps to reduce weight, improves the health of skin and increases the immunity.

Ingredients
- 8 kokum / kokam / punarpuli, fresh / dried
- 2 cups water
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds / jeera
- 10 curry leaves / kadi patta
- 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 2 green chilli, finely chopped
- 2 cup coconut milk, thick
- salt to taste
- ¼ tsp crushed pepper, optional
- few coriander leaves, finely chopped
Instructions
- firstly, in a bowl soak kokam in hot water for atleast 30 minutes.
- further, squeeze the juice from kokam and keep aside.
- in a large kadai heat oil and add cumin seeds.
- further add curry leaves, garlic and green chilli. saute well.
- now add squeezed kokam juice discarding the pulp.
- get kokam juice to a boil.
- further add coconut milk. make sure to keep flame on low-medium else coconut milk might curdle.
- stir well and add salt.
- also get to a boil and give a good stir.
- furthermore, simmer the curry for a minute or two.
- then add chopped coriander leaves.
- also add crushed pepper to enhance the flavour. however pepper is optional.
- finally, serve sol kadi with plain rice or drink it plain.
how to make sol kadhi or kokum curry with step by step photo recipe:

notes:
- firstly, using hot water to soak kokum helps to release juice quickly.
- furthermore, as a variation, skip the boiling step and just mix kokum juice and coconut milk along with some garlic and green chilli.
- also, add garlic and green chilli while extracting milk from coconut.
- finally, do not boil sol kadhi too much as they might curdle.
