however i particularly like to be simple and i enjoy the simple upma recipe with a small portion of rava kesari bath. this combination is also popularly known as chow chow bath in bangalore, karnataka and is one of the popular breakfast served in morning tiffin centres. further the upma is also served with choice of chutney’s. it can be a simple coconut chutney, peanut chutney or even onion tomato chutney. but in udupi hotels, it can be served with khara avalakki which is popularly known as sajjige bajil.

upma recipewhile it is one of the easiest breakfast recipes from rava, yet i would like to add few tips to make perfect rava upma recipe. firstly, slightly roast the rava and do not turn them golden. secondly, add rava only after the water boils vigorously, else rava will form lumps. lastly, simmer while adding rava otherwise the rava will not get cooked uniform and ends up forming lumps in upma.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup bombay rava / semolina / sooji
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard / rai / sasuve
  • ½ tsp chana dal (optional)
  • ½ tsp urad dal
  • 1 dried red chilli
  • few curry leaves
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilli, finely chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 3 cups water
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ghee / clarified butter
  • ½ lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
  1. firstly, dry roast 1 cup bombay rava on low flame for 2-3 minutes. keep aside to cool completely.
  2. now in a large kadai heat 2 tbsp oil and add 1 tsp mustard, ½ tsp urad dal, 1 dried red chilli and few curry leaves. also add jeera for more flavour.
  3. now saute till the mustard seeds splutter.
  4. add in ½ onion and saute well.
  5. also saute 2 green chilli and 1 inch ginger.
  6. now pour 3 cups water and get to vigorous boil.
  7. further add ½ tsp sugar, ½ tsp salt and 1 tsp ghee. mix well.
  8. keeping the flame on low start adding roasted rava slowly, stirring continuously in another hand.
  9. this helps to prevent from any lumps formation.
  10. now mix continuously till the rava absorbs water.
  11. cover and simmer on low flame for 5 minutes or till upma is cooked well.
  12. furthermore add ½ lemon juice and 2 tbsp coriander leaves. mix well.
  13. finally, serve rava upma / uppittu with coconut chutney or plain.

notes:

  • firstly, roasting rava is optional. however it prevents upma from turning sticky.
  • also adjust the water from 2½ to 3 cups depending on texture you are looking for.
  • additionally, add jeera in tempering and skip chana dal for authentic south indian upma recipe.
  • furthermore, adding a tsp of ghee makes uppittu more soft and tasty.
  • finally, rava upma / uppittu taste great when served hot.
