Rice Paddu Recipe | Instant Rice Flour Appe | Chawal Ke Appe with detailed photo and video recipe. An easy, simple South Indian instant breakfast recipe made with rice flour and rava to form little, shaped dumplings. It is a well-known breakfast recipe in most South Indian households, typically made with leftover idli or dosa batter. It is generally served with a spicy dip or chutney and sambar, but it contains all the required spices and herbs and is shared as is without any sides.
Instant paddu, or appe, is not a new recipe and is made with rava, besan, or even lentils. But preparing it only with rice flour is very new and should produce the same texture and flavour as idli batter. It is primarily due to the addition of rava with rice flour; otherwise, the appe may sink while frying. The other advantage of this recipe is that it takes only 10 mins to prepare and serve, with no soaking, grinding, or fermentation. Most of the time, we forget to soak and prepare the batter for idli & dosa recipes. Hence, we end up making 2-minute Maggi, or the same poha or upma recipes. But having an instant version of the traditional recipes is always handy. You can surprise your friends or family with a healthy breakfast that requires little preparation or planning.
Furthermore, some additional tips, suggestions, and variants for the instant rice appe recipe. Firstly, the combination of rice flour and rava is very important, and do not attempt this recipe with just rice flour. The addition of semolina gives the dough a rough texture and helps hold the ball shape. Secondly, you may not have an appe pan handy, as it is purpose-based and used only for preparing appes. In that case, you may use a dosa or chapathi pan too and pour the batter in small batches to form an appe. Lastly, I have shared this recipe with a spicy green coriander chutney, which makes for an ideal combination. But you may also try this with other chutneys, including different types of sambar.

About Instant Rice Paddu
The Instant Rice Flour Appe, known as Rice Paddu, is a fast and tasty breakfast dish from South India. The recipe requires only basic pantry items and takes less than five minutes to make. The batter does not need any soaking, grinding, or fermentation process. The rice flour base requires just two additional ingredients to create instant batter. The chef should pour the batter into an appe pan and cook it until it reaches a golden colour. The recipe takes only 10 minutes to prepare a wholesome breakfast. The paddu maintains its shape because the combination of rice flour and a small quantity of rava acts as a binding agent. The soft and crispy appe you create can be paired with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, peanut chutney, and sambar. The recipe is a suitable option for both light dinners and evening snacks.
The instant version has achieved widespread recognition as a street food delicacy across South India. Active food stalls in busy urban areas prepare fresh food throughout their operating hours. The basic batter permits fast cooking because it requires no time-consuming cooking process. The appe pan produces each paddu with an attractive golden exterior and a tender interior. The batter becomes customizable by adding vegetables, herbs, and spices, which enhance its flavour. The recipe works well for mornings when people need to prepare their meals in a short amount of time. After school or work, families like to eat this snack because it provides them with substantial food. Every meal becomes more enjoyable when customers receive a hot bowl of sambar along with spicy chutney. Rice Paddu, also known as Instant Rice Flour Appe or Chawal Ke Appe, is a quick and delicious breakfast recipe that comes together in just 10 minutes. It delivers a crispy outer layer, a soft centre, and pairs perfectly with chutney, sambar, or a hot cup of filter coffee.
- Smooth Batter: Prepare a lump-free batter with rice flour and a little rava. Let it rest for 10 minutes so the rava absorbs the moisture.
- Appe Pan: Grease the moulds lightly before pouring the batter. A hot pan helps the paddu cook evenly and release easily.
- Cooking: Cover the pan while cooking to trap the steam. Flip the paddu only after the base turns golden and crisp.
- Consistency: Add a little water if the batter becomes too thick after resting. A flowing batter creates soft and fluffy paddu.
