tomato biryani recipe | thakkali biryani | tomato biryani in pressure cooker with detailed photo and video recipe. a famous south indian flavoured biryani recipe prepared mainly with tomato purée and coconut milk. basically, one-pot meal or one pot biryani recipe which is prepared in a pressure cooker can be ideal lunch box recipe. it is also popularly known as tomato rice thakkali rice and is perhaps one of the most common lunch box recipes.

tomato biryani recipe | thakkali biryani | tomato biryani in a pressure cooker with step by step photo and video recipe. the traditional biryani recipe is either prepared with a mix of vegetables or choice of meat. whereas this tomato-based biryani is an easy and unique biryani recipe prepared without many veggies. basically, it looks very similar to tomato pulav or tomato rice but significant difference in taste and spice level.

i have shared quite a few biryani recipes till now but this tomato biryani recipe is the simplest of all. moreover i have also shared the cooker biryani recipe, but to be honest this is the simplest of all. moreover, thakkali biryani is a unique biryani compared to other traditional biryani recipes. apart from using biryani spices and mint leaves, tomato biryani’s main ingredients is coconut milk. addition of coconut milk makes it unique and native to tamil cuisine or perhaps south indian biryani recipe. i personally like all biryani recipes to eat but when it comes to preparing i like this biryani most because of the pressure cooker usage. the recipe can be done within 15 minutes if you have all the ingredients ready.

furthermore, some important tips and recommendations while preparing tomato biryani recipe. firstly, i have used freshly prepared tomato puree for this recipe which hastens the sautéing process. alternatively you can use chopped tomatoes too and 2-3 medium-size tomatoes should be enough for this recipe. secondly, if you do not like the coconut milk flavour, then it can be totally skipped. add the same quantity of water as an alternative. lastly, i always soak basmati rice before using it for any biryani or pulav recipes and would recommend the same for this recipe. also, seeraga basmati rice / sona masuri rice is a good option if you do not like basmati rice.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta
  • 5 cloves / lavang
  • 1 inch cinnamon / dalchini
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 pods cardamom / elachi
  • 1 tsp cumin / jeera
  • ½ tsp fennel / saunf
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • ¼ tsp turmeric / haldi
  • 1 green chilli, slit
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • ½ tsp kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder
  • 1 tsp biryani masala
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ carrot, cubed
  • 2 tbsp peas / matar
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp mint / pudina, finely chopped
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup basmati rice, soaked 20 minutes

Instructions
 

  • firstly, in a pressure cooker heat ghee and saute spice.
  • add 1 onion, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and 1 green chilli. saute well.
  • now add 1 cup tomato puree and cook till it releases oil.
  • further add ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp chilli powder, 1 tsp biryani masala and 1 tsp salt. saute well.
  • additionally, add vegetables of your choice.
  • now add 1 cup coconut milk and 1 cup water. mix well.
  • furthermore, add 1 cup basmati rice, soaked 20 minutes and give a good mix.
  • cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium flame.
  • finally, serve tomato biryani with onion tomato raita or as it is.

how to make tomato biryani with step by step photo:

  1. firstly, in a pressure cooker heat ghee and saute 1 bay leaf, 1-inch cinnamon, 5 cloves, 1 star anise, 2 pods cardamom, 1 tsp cumin and ½ tsp fennel.

  2. add 1 onion and saute well, followed by 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and 1 green chilli.

  3. now add 1 cup tomato puree (tomato puree prepared by blending 3 large tomatoes to smooth paste)

  4. cook on medium flame till the tomato paste thickens and releases oil.

  5. further add ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp chilli powder, 1 tsp biryani masala and 1 tsp salt.

  6. saute until the spices get cooked completely.

  7. additionally, add ½ carrot, 2 tbsp peas, 2 tbsp mint and 1 tbsp coriander leaves. saute for a minute.

  8. now add 1 cup coconut milk and 1 cup water. mix well. if you do not prefer coconut milk, then add 2 cups water.

  9. furthermore, add 1 cup basmati rice, soaked 20 minutes and give a good mix.

  10. cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium flame or till the rice gets cooked completely.

  11. finally, serve tomato biryani with onion tomato raita or as it is.

notes:

  • firstly, preparing tomato puree is optional, you can also finely chop them.
  • also, adding coconut milk enhances the flavour of biryani.
  • additionally, adding vegetables are optional, however, i prefer to add vegetables to make it more nutritious.
  • finally, tomato biryani tastes great when prepared slightly spicy and tangy.
