there are many ways of making chivda. among all, karnataka style is most popular chivda recipe. we use thin poha or avalakki, dry fruits and dry coconut slices. i love the crunchy bites of coconut slices along with peanuts.

Ingredients
  • 1 bowl thin poha
  • ½ cup peanuts
  • ½ cup putani / roasted chana dal
  • 10 cashews
  • ½ cup dried coconut slices
  • 10 raisins
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard deeds
  • 5 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds / jeera
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 red chilli, dried
  • pinch of hing / asafetida
  • 4 tsp oil
  • salt to taste
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
  1. firstly, dry roast poha in microwave for 1- 2 minutes or keep under the sun to make it crisp.
  2. furthermore, heat oil and splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, red chilli and curry leaves.
  3. later fry the ground nuts and roasted chana dal (putani) over a low flame.
  4. also add sliced dry coconut and fry till it turns golden brown. also add cashew nuts and raisins. fry on a low flame till raisins puff up.
  5. now add sugar, salt, turmeric powder and turn off the flame.
  6. mix well and add to the roasted thin poha (make sure your poha is crunchy)
  7. mix thoroughly. adjust the seasoning, if required.namkeen chivda
  8. finally, allow namkeen chivda to cool at room temperature and then store in an air tight container.

notes:

  • firstly, make sure your chivda is crunchy before you add to tempering.
  • you can also add chilli powder to make it more spicy.
  • furthermore, namkeen chivda can be stored for almost a month in an air tight container.
  • finally, namkeen chivda can also be topped with chopped onions or curd and served with hot chai (tea) as your evening snacks.
