Butter Dal Fry Recipe | How to Make Butter Dal & Jeera Rice – Dhaba Style with step by step photo and video recipe. dal and rice recipe is a unique and popular combination across india. the basic types of dal with basic spices are prepared commonly, but you may always wonder how this is done in restaurants or dhaba. well, this post would help you and try to replicate the same taste as you get in most of dhaba with few minimal and basic ingredients.

I have always been a fan of simple and comfort food recipes. you may notice in my blog and especially the rice, curry, sambar, rasam and dal section and the types of varieties posted in it. yet i feel it is incomplete and there are so many types of recipes to cover. for instance, i have posted the dal fry, dal makhani recipe, yet this recipe which is similar to any of this dal, is completely different in taste and procedure. firstly, the set of lentils used in this is a unique combination. basically, it is either 5 types of dal or a combination of 2 dal in a 1:1 ratio. but this is very unique as 3 types of dal are used to make this a comfort dal. also, the set of spices used is minimal with just chilli powder and turmeric, thus making a simple dal recipe. it is generally severed with specially prepared jeera rice which i have posted with this post. do try this combo and certainly leave feedback about it.

Ingredients
  

for butter dal fry:

  • ¼ cup toor dal, soaked
  • ¼ cup chana dal, soaked
  • ¼ cup moong dal
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp oil
  • cup water
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp kasuri methi
  • 1 chilli, slit
  • 1 inch ginger, chopped
  • 3 clove garlic, chopped
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp coriander, chopped
  • ¼ tsp garam masala

for jeera rice:

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp pepper, crushed
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp coriander, chopped

Instructions
 

how to make butter dal fry:

  • firstly, in a pressure cooker take ¼ cup toor dal, ¼ cup chana dal ¼ cup moong dal. make sure to soak the dal atleast for 20 minutes.
  • also add ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp salt and 1 tsp oil.
  • add 2¼ cup water and pressure cook for 5 whistles.
  • cook until the dal is cooked well. keep aside.
  • in a large kadai, heat 2 tbsp butter. add 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp kasuri methi, 1 chilli, slit, 1 inch ginger and 3 clove garlic.
  • saute until the spices turn aromatic.
  • now add ½ onion and saute slightly.
  • further, add ½ tsp turmeric and 1 tsp chilli powder. saute on low flame until the spices turn aromatic.
  • add 1 tomato and saute until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
  • pour in cooked dal and ½ tsp salt.
  • mix well combining everything.
  • furthermore, add 1 cup water or as required adjusting the consistency.
  • simmer for 3 minutes or until the flavours are absorbed well.
  • now add 2 tbsp coriander and ¼ tsp garam masala. mix well.
  • finally, enjoy butter dal fry with jeera rice.

how to make jeera rice:

  • firstly, soak 1 cup basmati rice for 20 minutes.
  • now in a large vessel take enough water.
  • add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp oil and get to a boil.
  • add in soaked rice and boil for 5 minutes.
  • once the rice is cooked well, drain off and keep aside.
  • in a pan heat 2 tbsp ghee, 1 tsp cumin, ½ tsp pepper and saute until the spices turn aromatic.
  • further add cooked rice, ½ tsp salt and 2 tbsp coriander.
  • mix gently, without breaking the rice grains.
  • finally, enjoy jeera rice with dal.
