moreover, garlic butter naan is my favourite recipe. whenever we visit to a north indian or punjabi dhaba, garlic butter naan and tandoori roti is always on the menu. in mains, he always order malai kofta recipe or palak paneer recipe with tandoori roti or naan bread. also, he always orders dal fry recipe or spinach dal recipe to make it a perfect meal.

according to wiki, naan is a persian word which literally means bread or food. naan is a fusion of persian and indian mughlai cuisine. traditionally, naan breads are prepared with all purpose flour with yeast and curd. however, these days it is replaced with baking powder and baking soda. garlic butter naan is modern variety of tandoori naan with generous amount of butter and garlic coated on naan.

i have posted several roti recipes, especially ragi rotti recipe, akki rotti recipe, rumali roti and jolada rotti recipe. also i have posted several curry recipesand these rotis taste amazing with rajma masala recipe, aloo gobhi recipe, ennegayi recipe(stuffed brinjal) and dal tadka recipe.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup maida or all purpose flour
  • ¾ tsp baking powder
  • ⅔ rd cup of curd or yoghurt
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp oil
  • salt to taste
for garlic butter spread:
  • 4 tsp butter
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped garlic
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)

  1. firstly, in a small bowl, add few tsp of garlic.
  2. further, mix well and keep aside.

  1. in a bowl combine 1 cup maida, salt to taste, ¼tsp baking soda, ¾ tsp baking powder and ½ tsp sugar.
  2. next add ⅔rd cup of curd and mix well.
  3. if sticky then add required amount of maida and knead dough.
  4. punch well and make a non sticky soft dough.
  5. add a tsp of oil and coat well.
  6. cover with moist cloth and rest for minimum of 1 hour.
  7. after an hour, pinch a small lemon sized ball.
  8. dust with some maida and roll to a oval shape using rolling pin.
  9. make sure you do not make too thin nor thick.
  10. apply water on one side of naan.
  11. now slowly flip over and put it on hot tawa.
  12. slightly press. this helps the naan to stick on to the tawa and when you can flip the tawa upside down it will be intact.
  13. brush some garlic butter over the naan.
  14. now after a minute, flip the tawa upside down and cook naan directly on flame till they turn golden brown
  15. finally add some more butter
  16. serve garlic naan hot.

  1. firstly, in a large mixing bowl combine 1 cup maida, salt to taste, ¼tsp baking soda, ¾ tsp baking powder and ½ tsp sugar. mix well.

  2. next add 2/3rd cup of curd and mix well. make soft dough.

  3. if your dough seems sticky then add required amount of maida and knead dough.

  5. add a tsp of oil and coat well.

  6. further, cover with moist cloth and rest for minimum of 1 hour.

  7. after an hour, pinch a small lemon sized ball.

  8. furthermore, dust with some maida and roll to a oval shape using rolling pin. make sure you do not make too thin nor thick. and also keep the size in mind. it should not be larger than your tawa size.

  9. also apply water on one side of naan. make sure you coat uniformly. this helps naan to stick on tawa.

  10. furthermore, slowly flip over and put it on hot tawa. remember, be gentle and put the water coated side down to tawa. slightly press. this helps the naan to stick on to the tawa and when you can flip the tawa upside down it will be intact.

  11. further brush some garlic butter over the naan. be generous while applying butter.

  12. now after a minute, flip the tawa upside down and cook naan directly on flame till they turn golden brown

  13. also add some more butter (this is optional, however, helps to make your naan stays soft for longer time)

  14. finally, serve garlic naan hot with your favourite curry like palak paneer or malai kofta.

notes:

  • first of all, applying water is mandatory. this helps naan to stick to tawa and can reverse the tawa and cook directly on flame.
  • in addition, you can also use oven to bake the naan instead of tawa.
  • furthermore, roll to any desired shape. however, i like to keep it oval as it looks similar to the one served in restaurants.
  • finally, you can skip addition of garlic if you do not like garlic flavour.
