Dal Chawal Chokka

Dal Bhat Chokha Recipe | Dal Chawal Chokka with step-by-step photo and video recipe. Dal and rice-based meal combo is a popular meal for lunch and dinner across India. There are many different ways the simple dal curry can be prepared, but the idea remains the same with the same offering. One such easy and simple variation is dal bhat chokha or dal chokka known for its unique potato mash offering with simple dal rice.

As I explained earlier, there are many different ways a dal and rice combo meal is served and offered. The most popular is jeera fried rice with dal tadka or tempered dal curry. However, the same offering is modified and adapted to the regional cuisine. Dal bhat chokha is one such variation or offering from the Bihari cuisine. The dal curry prepared in this post is a basic dal without much spice in it. Also, the rice is simply cooked without any additional tempering. However, the magic happens when the mashed potatoes are tempered with spices and then served as a total meal. This meal combo is also served for morning breakfast, but I recommend this for Lunch and also for a light dinner meal.

Furthermore, some more additional tips, suggestions, and variations to the dal bhat chokha recipe. Firstly, the dal recipe is made with toor dal or pigeon pea lentil. This lentil makes it ideal for the combo meal, but other types of lentils can also be used. You can use moong dal, masoor dal, and even chana dal. Secondly, if you feel the dal is on less spice level. You may add some basic spices like garam masala, or even store-bought dal masala. Lastly, if you have some time, you may extend this recipe by preparing jeera rice or even fried rice. Also, the mashed potato curry can be served with simple roti and chapati.
