 with step by step photo recipe. jeera rice also known as zeera rice and is one of the easiest and quickest rice recipe prepared in jiffy. jeera pulao is often served with dal tadka or any dal recipe or curries of choice. however, it can be consumed by itself without any side dish as it rich in cumin and ghee flavour. this flavourful rice recipe is from north india, but is hugely popular all over the world.

secondly, jeera pulao is my families favourite rice recipe out of all the other flavoured recipe. whenever, my family plans lunch or dinner in a restaurant, we do not miss to order jeera rice for main course. especially for my husband, after having heavy punjabi curries, jeera rice is a must. he loves to eat this amazing rice recipe with dal makhani, dal fry, or dal tadka. if he is in a good mood, he even enjoys with palak paneer, malai kofta or even kadhai paneer as well.

according to wiki, jeera rice was introduced to indian cuisine by moghlai cuisine. this north indian recipe is basically prepared with basmati rice and cumin seeds, has myriad health benefits. jeera pulao is often served after the rotis and creamy curries. also goes well with pancharatna dal, dal tadkakhichdimaa channa ki dalmoong daljeera consists of thymol and other essential oils which helps in digestion. the other important health benefits of cumins are, it helps in lowering blood pressure, improves heart rate, fights cancer and relives asthma and cold.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
  • 1 tsp jeera / cumin seeds
  • salt to taste
  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta
  • few coriander leaves, for garnishing
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
  1. soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes and rinse the rice till the water runs clean. drain off the water and keep aside.
  2. in a large non stick pan / kadai add a tbsp of ghee. also add cumin seeds and bay leaf. saute for a minute till they begin to splutter.
  3. now add the soaked basmati rice.
  4. saute on medium flame for a minute. saute it gently so that you do not break rice.
  5. add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. always maintain the proportion of 1:2 (rice : water). close the lid and allow to cook on low flame for 20 minutes.
  6. after 20 minutes, gently fluff the rice with a fork.
  7. garnish with coriander leaves and serve jeera rice hot with dal fry, or dal tadka.

notes:

  1. jeera rice can also be prepared by pan frying cooked rice with jeera flavoured tempering.
  2. add cashews to make it more rich.
  3. you can also use plain sona masuri rice to prepare zeera rice.
  4. to have rice strand separate like restaurant style; always soak the rice for 30 minutes and saute in ghee for a minute.
  5. jeera is added in most of the indian recipes, as it gives flavour to the dish plus health benefits.
