Khatti Dal Recipe | Hyderabadi Special Khatti Dhal with step-by-step photo and video recipe. Dal or lentil-based curries have always been a staple food of India. It has different forms, types, and variations across India which differ with the additional ingredients added to it. One such easy and simple South Indian variation is khatti dal known for its tangy and sour taste.

I have posted quite a few dal recipes on my blog till now, but this recipe has to be a unique dal recipe. Typically dal recipe prepared would have tamarind or tomatoes added to it. Adding these will help to get the required sourness to the dal. However, this dal recipe takes both and hence the name “khatti”. The word khatti means tangy and it is the selling point of this dal. Typically, I avoid any sour taste curries or gravy for my personal use. But this has something unique and special taste which makes you prepare more frequently. Moreover, the consistency of this is a perfect choice for both roti and rice. Therefore, I would recommend you to try this dal once I am sure you would be a big fan of it.

Furthermore, some more related and additional tips, suggestions, and variations to the Khatti dal recipe. Firstly, I have used toor dal or pigeon pea lentils for this recipe. It is ideal to use toor dal but not limited to it. You can use masoor dal, moong dal, and even a combination of all of the above dal. Secondly, try to use juicy and ripe tomatoes for this dal. Adding ripe tomatoes helps to make the dal slightly sweet with a tangy taste. Lastly, the consistency of dal has to be in between. It cannot be either thick or thin. Moreover, once the dal is rested it would attain thick consistency. You may have to add water before it is reheated.
