sweet potato paratha recipe | sweet potato thepla | sweet potato roti with detailed photo and video recipe. an easy and popular indian flatbread recipe made with mashed sweet potato and wheat flour. unlike the other traditional paratha recipes, the sweet potato puree is directly added to the wheat flour dough similar to thepla. the recipe is ideal for lunch boxes or to be served as a snack with condiments like spicy chutney or pickle.
well before i started the blog, i was very comfortable with hand-picked paratha recipes. it was typically around aloo paratha, gobi paratha or cheese paratha. having said that, now after 5 years of blogging, i am comfortable with myriad types of paratha. more importantly, i keep myself active in gathering different types of paratha. sweet potato paratha recipe or shakarakand paratha is one such variation which i came across very recently. unlike the other traditional paratha recipes, i liked the way the sweet potato is directly mixed to the dough. it makes it very easy to make and also less prone to errors as compared to stuffing. you may need skilled hands to stuff it but this paratha can be made by anyone.
anyway, i would like to highlight some tips, suggestions and variations for a perfect sweet potato paratha recipe. firstly, as you may have noticed, i have added sweet potato directly added to the dough. while it is recommended to do this way, you can also stuff into the dough and make paratha. secondly, because of the nature of sweet potato, it would add sweet taste to the paratha. hence, it is recommended to make it spicy to have the sweet, spicy and savoury taste to the paratha. lastly, you can use these parathas as a snack while travelling. you can roll it in an aluminum foil or even banana leaf and serve it similar to a thepla recipe.

Ingredients
- 300 grams sweet potato
- 2 cup wheat flour
- ยผ tsp turmeric
- ยฝ tsp garam masala
- ยฝ tsp aamchur
- ยผ tsp ajwain / carom seeds
- 1 chilli, finely chopped
- ยฝ tsp ginger paste
- 1 tsp kasuri methi, crushed
- ยฝ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped
- water, for kneading
- oil, for roasting
Instructions
- firstly, in a cooker pour water, place 300 grams sweet potato and sprinkle salt.
- pressure cook for 3 whistles or until sweet potato is cooked well.
- peel the skin off and mash it smooth.
- add 2 cup wheat flour, ยผ tsp turmeric, ยฝ tsp garam masala, ยฝ tsp aamchur and ยผ tsp ajwain.
- also add 1 chilli, ยฝ tsp ginger paste, 1 tsp kasuri methi, ยฝ tsp salt and 2 tbsp coriander.
- crumble and mix well making sure the spices are well combined.
- knead the dough well-adding water as required.
- knead to a smooth and soft dough and rest for 20minutes.
- knead the dough again slightly and pinch a ball sized dough.
- dust with wheat flour and roll to small disc.
- further, roll it in thinly like chapati or paratha.
- now on a hot tawa place the rolled paratha and cook for a minute.
- furthermore, when the base is partly cooked, flip the masala paratha.
- also, spread ยฝ tsp olive oil / ghee and press slightly both the sides.
- flip again once or twice till both the sides are cooked properly.
- finally, serveย sweet potato paratha withย raitaย andย pickle.
how to make sweet potato thepla with step by step photo:

- firstly, make sure to cook sweet potato well else it may be difficult to mash.
- also, adjust the spices accordingly to make it spicy.
- additionally, roast the paratha on medium flame else it may not get cooked from inside.
