cabbage pakoda recipe | cabbage bhajiya | cabbage fritters recipe with detailed photo and video recipe. a mouth watering deep fried fritters recipe prepared from shredded cabbage leaves mixed with beasn and other spices. an ideal party starters / appetizer or simply can be used for evening snack with masala chai.
cabbage pakoda recipecabbage pakoda recipe | cabbage bhajiya | cabbage fritters recipe with step by step photo and video recipe. there are several variation to pakoras and also it can be prepared with various vegetables. out of all onion pakora or khandha bhajiya is hugely popular snack and cabbage bhajiya is prepared very similar. it follows the same procedure and steps yet has a subtle taste variation and crispness due to shredded cabbage.

this recipe is shared by my friend shreeprada. she prepares plain cabbage pakora recipe during festival seasons and during those time when onions are prohibited from use. however in this recipe post i have added few onions slices just to enhance the taste. but it is completely optional and the pakoras can be simply prepared with shredded cabbage. also, i even prepare the recipe with purple coloured cabbage too, but i prefer the white coloured cabbage as they are more tastier. further, i typically enjoy eating pakoras with maggie hot & sweet tomato ketchup or tomato sauce, and even i recommend the same for cabbage bhajiya too.

while the recipe for cabbage pakoda is extremely simple, yet few tips and suggestions for perfect crispy one. firstly, shred the cabbage to thin slices otherwise so that it does not get much besan coating. secondly, add water to besan and shredded cabbage carefully little by little if required. typically the moisture with onion and cabbage is more than sufficient, however you can add water if you think the mixture is dry. lastly, deep fry the pakoda in medium heat and never on low flame. it would absorb more oil and turn soggy if deep fried in low flame.

Ingredients
  • 2 cup cabbage, thinly shredded
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • ¾ cup besan, gram flour
  • ¼ cup rice flour
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder / haldi
  • pinch of hing / asafoetida
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • few curry leaves, chopped
  • salt to taste
  • oil for deep frying
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
  1. firstly, in a large mixing bowl take 2 cups of shredded cabbage and 1 sliced onion.
  2. further add ¾ cup besan.
  3. also add ¼ cup rice flour. alternatively use corn flour to make it more crispy.
  4. additionally, add 1 tsp chilli powder, ¼ tsp turmeric, pinch of hing, 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste, few curry leaves and salt to taste.
  5. combine and mix well without adding any water.
  6. also squeeze the cabbage to get moisture out from it.
  7. the cabbage and onions will release moisture and make dough moist.
  8. form a dough, add 2 tsp of water if required.
  9. now take a small ball sized dough and drop into hot oil.
  10. make sure to spread the dough and not pile up one over another.
  11. fry on medium flame stirring occasionally.
  12. also fry till the pakodas turn crisp and golden brown.
  13. finally, serve crispy cabbage pakoda with tomato sauce along with masala tea.

notes:

  • firstly, add green chilli to make it slightly spicy pakodas.
  • also replace rice flour with corn flour to get more crispy pakoras.
  • additionally, make sure not to add any water while preparing dough.
  • finally, cabbage pakoda stays good for 3-4 days when stored in airtight container.
