probably, oats upma is almost prepared every week in my house. perhaps, the healthiest breakfast option in our breakfast menu. perhaps, the main reason is i love the crunchy bites of veggies in oats upma. usually, i try to keep my morning breakfast with full of nutritions. hence i add cashews, carrots, beans and peas and even peanuts to my upma. however, you can add vegetables of your own choice.

furthermore, the health benefits of oats cannot be denied. oats are good for health and one of the healthiest foods on earth. it is very low in calorie and helps in weight reduction. also, oats helps to improve digestion and reduces the risks of blood pressure. in addition, it also reduces the risk of colorectal cancer. hence i try to experiment with oats recipes and i have already shared oats khichdi and oats dosai will be continuing to post more and more oats recipe in future too.

Ingredients
for roasting oats:
  • 1 cup quick cooking oats / rolled oats
  • ½ tsp oil
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
other ingredients:
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 8 to 10 cashews
  • 1 inch ginger, chopped
  • 1 green chilies, chopped
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • ½ carrots, chopped
  • 6 french beans, chopped
  • 5 curry leaves
  • ¼ cup green peas
  • few coriander leaves, chopped
  • 2 cups water (or as required)
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • salt as required
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
roasting oats:
  1. firstly, heat ½ tsp oil in a pan and add 1 cup of oats and a pinch of turmeric powder.
  2. fry them till they turn crisp.
preparing upma:
  1. firstly, in a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil. add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp urad dal and 2 dried red chilli. wait till the mustard seeds crackle.
  2. now add few cashews / groundnut and curry leaves.
  3. add finely chopped onions. saute till they turn pinkish.
  4. then add chopped chillies, carrots, beans.
  5. also add green peas and cook for a minute or two.
  6. then add the roasted oats. stir lightly.
  7. add salt, sugar, turmeric powder as required.
  8. then sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of water slowly.
  9. on a low flame, steam the oats upma covering with a lid for 5 to 6 minutes.
  10. furthermore, add chopped coriander leaves and squeeze some lemon juice.
  11. finally, oats upma is ready.

  8. then sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of  water slowly.

  11. finally, oats upma is ready. serve with farsan or mixture, curd if you like.

notes:

  • firstly, it tastes good as it is. best served with yogurt.
  • also, you can serve with coconut chutney.
  • finally, serve and garnish with fresh grated coconut.
