while i am big fan of any paneer recipe, but i personally does not like paneer tikka masala recipe. perhaps, i like to eat as just paneer tikka without any gravy or even kadai paneer masala. however, my husband likes to eat tikka masala recipe with paneer. also, paneer tikka masala is a must recipe whenever we plan for potluck barbecue with our friends. more importantly, my husband takes the lead role in organising, preparing and barbecuing the paneer. hence, today i planned to release the same version with a video.

furthermore, the history of paneer tikka masala is very interesting. according to one theory, tikka masala was first invented in an indian restaurant in glasgow, scotland. however, another theory suggests that the paneer tikka masala was invented accidentally in either punjab or uttar pradesh. interestingly, tikka masala recipe is hugely popular in england and in other europe countries. this may suggest and indicate the birth of tikka masala recipe in scotland. having said that, paneer tikka masala is hugely popular in indian restaurants too.

Ingredients
for marination:
  • 1 cup curd / yogurt, fresh & thick
  • 1 tsp kashmiri chilli powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger - garlic paste
  • ¾ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ¼ capsicum, cubed
  • ¼ onion, cubed
  • 9-10 homemade paneer / cottage cheese, cubed
for roasting paneer:
  • 1 tsp oil
for paneer tikka gravy:
  • 2 tsp oil
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 10 cashews
  • 1 tsp kashmiri chilli powder
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp garam masala powder
  • salt to taste
  • 2 cups water, add as required
  • 1 tsp kasuri methi / dried fenugreek leaves
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
paneer marination recipe:
  1. firstly, in a large mixing bowl take thick curd.
  2. add chilli powder, turmeric, coriander powder, garam masala, ginger - garlic paste, salt, lemon juice and oil. mix well.
  3. furthermore add cubed capsicum, onions and paneer.
  4. mix gently and marinate for 30 minutes.
roasting paneer recipe:
  1. firstly, take a large tawa and grease with oil.
  2. furthermore place marinated panner pieces and roast all the sides.
paneer tikka gravy recipe:
  1. firstly, in a large kadai take some oil and saute finely chopped onions.
  2. then add tomato puree and cashew paste.
  3. furthermore add chilli powder, turmeric, garam masala and salt.
  4. also add ¼ cup of water and mix well.
  5. cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. now add roasted panner and leftover curd mixture.
  7. furthermore, adjust the consistency by adding water.
  8. get the gravy to boil.
  9. finally, add crushed methi leaves and coriander leaves.

  1. firstly, in a large mixing bowl take thick curd / yogurt.

  2. furthermore, add chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, ginger – garlic paste and salt.

  3. also add lemon juice and a tsp of oil.

  4. give a good mix till all the spices gets mixed uniformly with curd.

  6. also add homemade paneer pieces.

  7. mix gently without breaking paneer pieces. furthermore, marinate for 30 minutes.

roasting paneer recipe:

  1. firstly, take a large tawa and grease with oil.

  2. furthermore place marinated panner pieces along with capsicum and onions on tawa.

  3. once one side is roasted well, turn over and roast all the sides. keep aside.

paneer tikka gravy recipe:

  1. firstly, in a large kadai take some oil and saute finely chopped onions.

  2. then add tomato puree. to prepare tomato puree, blanch 2 tomatoes and blend smooth. (boil tomatoes in water for atleast 10 minutes or till they start leaving the skin)

  3. also add cashew paste. to prepare cashew paste, soak 10 cashews in ¼ cup of water for 15 minutes. then blend smooth.

  4. furthermore add chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala and salt.

  5. also add ¼ cup of water and mix well.

  6. then cover the kadai and simmer for 10 minutes till they thicken.

  7. now add roasted panner carefully, without breaking them.

  8. also add leftover curd mixture, prepared for marinating paneer.

  9. furthermore, give a good mix and adjust the consistency by adding some water.

  10. get the gravy to boil.

  11. then add some crushed methi leaves.

  12. finally serve paneer tikka masala topped with few coriander leaves along with rumali roti / garlic naan.

notes:

  • firstly, marinate the paneer for atleast 30 minutes to make it more juicy.
  • furthermore, increase the amount of chilli powder if you prefer spicy.
  • additionally, using fresh thick curd makes paneer tikka masala takes great.
  • finally, do not boil on high flame once you add leftover curd mixture.
