upma recipeuppitu recipe | upma recipe | rava upma recipe with step by step photo recipe. upma is one of the popular breakfast in south india. upma is called as uppitu and prepared with semolina. uppittu is accompanied by avalakki upkari in the breakfast of marriage functions. in udupi this combo is popularly called as bajil -upakari.

we usually prepare upma for breakfast, brunch or in evening snacks. serve it with hot masala chai or masala milk to enjoy the real taste. uppitu also can be packed in your lunch box. i make my upma little spicy, however, you can vary the amount of green chilli according to your spice level. if you are looking for more upma recipe, then check out oats upma, sevai upma and rava pongal.

upma / uppitu is nutritious as semolina is made with wheat. there are many ways of preparing upma, today i am showing most simple, easy and delicious uppitu recipe served in restaurants. upma is usually prepared with more oil to get rich taste and texture. however, i have used very little oil without compromising taste.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup semolina / bombay rava / sooji / rava (fine variety)
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1 green chilli, finely chopped
  • ½ inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • pinch hing
  • 1 dried red chilli
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 to 2 tsp sugar (optional) or add as required
  • salt as required
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions ( 1 cup =255 ml)
  1. finely chop onion, green chillies, ginger and keep aside.
  2. in a pan, heat 2 tbsp ghee or oil and add mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, hing, curry leaves and dried red chilli. allow them to splutter.
  3. now add the finely chopped onions and saute till they sweat.
  4. then add the chopped green chilli, ginger and saute for a minute.
  5. add 3 cups water and salt to taste.
  6. then add sugar. sugar is optional and you can skip it. we prefer a slight sweet taste in the uppittu. stir well.
  7. get the water to rolling boil.
  8. lower the flame to its lowest add the rava slowly stirring continuously to avoid lumps in the uppittu.
  9. cover and allow the rava uppittu to steam for a minutes on the low flame.
  10. then switch off the flame and add lemon juice.
  11. stir well and serve hot with bajil or chutney / pickle / mixture.

notes:

  • furthermore, add boiled vegetables of your choice in above recipe and make it healthier.
  • most of all, lemon juice increase the flavour of uppitu.
  • you can either roast the semolina and use if your upma turns sticky.

  1. Thank you very much for sharing the recipe of rava Upma. I would be grateful if you could show how to roast the Upma instead of making it sticky by allowing the water to cook. Also would be grateful how much water and rava should be used if I want the Upma to be dry like we get in restaurant.
