instant rasam recipe | tomato rasam without dal | no dal rasam with detailed photo and video recipe. a quick and easy rasam recipe prepared within minutes to cherish with steamed white rice for lunch and dinner. unlike the traditional rasam recipe, this saaru recipe is prepared with just tomatoes and onions with rasam powder and tamarind juice. apart from serving it with rice, it can also be served as spicy soup.
traditionally the rasam or saaru recipes involves time consuming and cumbersome process including pressure cooking toor dal. of course pressure cooking dal is not a rocket science. but it can be time consuming and of course it increases the number of dishes to be cleaned after cooking. to solve this problem, instant rasam recipe is good alternative without much hassle. basically you just need finely chopped tomatoes and onions with an authentic saaru pudi or rasam powder for tomato rasam without dal. also i have added tamarind juice for the authentic flavour with jaggery, but it is not a mandatory though.
the recipe for instant rasam recipe is extremely simple without any complicated steps. yet some tips and alternatives for a perfect tomato rasam without dal. firstly, i have added finely chopped onions to this rasam which is completely optional. while adding onions, adds a nice flavour to this rasam but just tomato base should also be equally good. secondly, i have used homemade fresh saaru pudi or rasam powder for authentic taste. alternatively i would recommend mtr or maiyya’s rasam powder if you are planning to use store bought one. lastly, adjust the consistency of the rasam by adding more or less water. i personally prefer watery thin rasam but it can completely upto you.

Ingredients
- 4 tsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp urad dal
- few curry leaves
- 1 dried red chilli
- 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 to matoes, finely chopped
- ¾ cup tamarind extract
- ½ tsp turmeric / haldi
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp jaggery / gud
- 2 green chilli, slit
- 1 cup water
- 2 tsp rasam powder
- 2 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped
Instructions
- firstly, in a large kadai heat 4 tsp oil and splutter 1 tsp mustard, 1 tsp urad dal, few curry leaves and 1 dried red chilli.
- also saute 4 cloves garlic to slightly golden.
- additionally add 1 onion and saute well.
- further add 3 tomatoes and saute slightly.
- also add ¾ cup tamarind extract, ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp jaggery and 1 tsp salt. mix well.
- cover and boil for 15 minutes or till tomatoes gets cooked well.
- furthermore, add 1 cup water and 2 green chilli. mix well.
- boil for a minute and adjust consistency.
- now add 2 tsp rasam powder and mix well avoiding from any lump formation.
- boil for 2 minutes or till rasam gets cooked completely.
- finally, and 2 tbsp coriander leaves and serve tomato rasam recipe with hot steamed rice.
how to make instant rasam with step by step photo:

notes:
- firstly, boil tomatoes well in tamarind water, else the raw smell will remain.
- additionally, adding onions is optional. you can skip if you do not prefer.
- further, use tomato puree if you do not prefer tomato pieces in rasam.
- finally, instant tomato rasam recipe taste great when served hot and spicy.

is garlic really necessary for rasam also..??!! it just kills the authentic flavor of the rasam..
you can skip if you dont want..tastes yum if you add 🙂
