i have posted quite a few snacks and breakfast recipes, yet i receive a lot of requests to post more on it. generally, these requests have an additional request to make it healthy with less or no oil. i have posted quite a few on that category too, but i guess the demand is to have something new and more interesting. keeping that trend, i am posting something very unique tikki, that is prepared by steam cooking and fried with almost 2 tsp of oil. i call it pyaaz ki tikki or wheat flour onion pockets, but can be named anything? moreover, the stuffing used in this recipe is very minimal. basically, it is the same stuffing used in my previous onion samosa. onion slices are mixed with thin poha to make a unique stuffing. i have also added a few seasonings and spices to the stuffing, but they should be easily available in your kitchen pantry. therefore, do try this easy and healthy snack and let me know if you have any suggestions for it?
furthermore, some more additional tips, suggestions and variants to the onion tikki recipe or pyaaz ki tikki. firstly, the recipe is made with wheat flour to have a healthy option for the snack. yet it can also be made with other flour like maida and a combination of maida and wheat. adding maida makes it a tasty snack meal. secondly, i have shaped these like pockets and hence named them onion pockets. but it can be shaped like a samosa or even like kachori as the shape does not impact the taste. lastly, if you have any leftover stuffing, you may use it to prepare paratha or even patti samsoa. i generally make this stuffing in excess and use it for various other snacks or bread.

Ingredients
for stuffing:
- 2 onion, sliced
- 1 cup poha / flattened rice, thin
- ¼ tsp turmeric
- ¾ tsp chilli powder
- ½ tsp cumin powder
- ½ tsp chaat masala
- 2 chilli, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped
- ½ tsp salt
for dough:
- 2 cup wheat flour
- ½ tsp salt
- water, for kneading
for tempering:
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard
- ½ tbsp sesame
- few curry leaves
- ¼ tsp chilli flakes
- ¼ tsp mixed herbs
Instructions
how to make onion stuffing:
- firstly, in a large bowl take 2 onion and 1 cup poha. adding poha helps to absorb moisture from onion and prevents tikki from turning soggy.
- add ¼ tsp turmeric, ¾ tsp chilli powder, ½ tsp cumin powder and ½ tsp chaat masala.
- also, add 2 chilli, 1 tsp ginger paste, 2 tbsp coriander and ½ tsp salt.
- squeeze and mix well making sure all the spices are well combined.
how to knead the dough and make onion pockets:
- firstly, in a large bowl take 2 cup wheat flour and ½ tsp salt.
- knead the dough adding water as required.
- knead to a smooth and soft dough.
- cover and rest for 20 minutes.
- knead the dough again slightly, and pinch a ball sized dough.
- dust the dough with flour and roll to thin thickness.
- place 2 tbsp of prepared onion stuffing.
- and fold to a square shape. seal the sides making sure it is well intact.
- now place the folded tikki into the steamer and steam for 15 minutes.
- steam until the tikki is cooked well and is non-sticky.
how to tempering the onion tikki:
- in a pan heat 2 tsp oil. add 1 tsp mustard, ½ tbsp sesame, few curry leaves.
- splutter the tempering.
- place the steamed tikki into the pan.
- roast on medium flame until the tikki turns crisp and golden brown.
- also, add ¼ tsp chilli flakes and ¼ tsp mixed herbs.
- finally, enjoy pyaaz ki tikki or onion pockets with tomato sauce.

- firstly, make sure to prepare the stuffing just before making tikki. as the onion will release moisture and makes tikki soggy.
- also, make the stuffing slightly spicy, else the onion pockets will taste bland.
